Spent the afternoon with Uncle Gene yesterday. If I make it to 96 years old, hope I’m half as tough, happy, and self-sufficient as he is! About a month after doing battle with his 1951 Ford tractor (and couple weeks in the hospital/rehab), he’s back to walking like it never happened. And driving…but that’s another story for another day 😉
We made what’s becoming our routine visit to Wardensville for a late lunch at the Broasted Chicken – one of the best burgers I’ve had and Gene loves the pork bar-b-que sandwich. The homemade chips are almost worth the trip themselves. The brews are served in frosted mugs. And you’ll never find friendlier service. Even on a rainy day, it’s a beautiful drive…and crossing the Va/WV line offers a glimpse of the Tuscarora Trail (a planned but never implemented western re-route of the AT).
Catching up, telling a few jokes, going over some local bluegrass events, gossiping about family 😉 made for a great visit. Every time, I seem to learn something new…about grandparents I never met, about how the framed pencil sketches on the wall are his own art work, about the reconditioned 1970 Silverado hidden under wraps (sweet!), and how he played Amazing Grace at church last week on his harmonica (accompanied by the preacher’s husband on piano). Gotta get there one Sunday just to witness that!
Looking forward to our next visit…
